SULINA
The unique charm of Sulina stays in the fact that here the Danube closes its long European route, mixing with the sea. Another field of big importance which contributes at creating a special atmosphere results from the history of this city full of legends. The famous sailor and writer Jean Bart created and implied in the social life of this city.
The first historical certifying of this locality preserved from the 10th century, even with the actual denomination: Sulina. After the famous maps of the Italian sailors, who included these places in their routes, Sulina was mentioned later on in the Turkish documents that used to consider very important the only navigable way at that time. The Turkish people built here a far with the declared purpose to ensure the connection of the Turkish capital with the area of the Danube. In 19th century, Sulina is attested as a simple fair of fishermen, which had the same fate as the north Dobrudja territory, being attached to Russia and then, after the Peace Treaty from Paris in 1856, the sovereignty of Sulina was again of Turkey.
Due to the commercial potential of this region, Sulina enjoyed the support of the European Commity for the Danube that invested in the arrangement of the navigable channel. The arrangements done determined the development of Sulina port that after 1856 got the statute of "Porto Franco" until the beginning of the World War II. It is the city that played a special role in the commercial life of Romania. Between 1870-1938, Sulina knew the most flourishing moments, being considered "the Little Venetia of the Orient", a city of a unique cosmopolitism, which hosted more than 22 religious communities and 7 foreign consulates.
The churches and the tombs from the old cemetery of the city, the old lighthouse and the palace of the European Commity of the Danube, are still speaking about this past. The access into this locality is done by the classical ships of Navrom Company and by fast ships of private companies.
